A year ago, Cytora joined Applied. Our mission is the same as the day we started: remove the friction in how risk flows across the insurance value chain. What has changed is how much of that chain we can now reach.
Twelve months is a good moment to step back. I've spent this year talking with insurers, MGAs and brokers on both sides of the trade, and those conversations have sharpened my view of where friction really sits, how the market is changing and what progress will take. I want to share those reflections here, along with what being part of Applied now makes possible for the insurers, MGAs and brokers who work with Cytora.
When we started Cytora, we focused on the underwriter's desk. Underwriters spend 40% to 50% of their time reading and interpreting submission data: PDFs, schedules, loss runs and emails, all retyped by hand. We built Cytora to turn that information into decision-ready data so underwriters could spend their time on the decisions that need their judgment.
This year showed me how much of the problem sits upstream. We could make an underwriter dramatically faster once a submission arrived. We had far less influence over how that submission was assembled, how complete it was or whether it reached the right insurer at all. Applied data shows that as many as 40% of submissions are never reviewed because of the friction and backlog in underwriting workflows. Every one of those is premium an insurer never had the chance to write.
The friction is symmetrical. Brokers rekey information into forms, and underwriters rekey it again on the other side. Brokers want clearer appetite from insurers, and insurers want complete submissions from brokers. Fixing one desk leaves the handoff between them untouched.
Commercial risk is bespoke. Two insurers can look at the same submission and care about very different things, and that difference is where their underwriting advantage lives. For years, the industry's attempts to standardize commercial submissions asked insurers to trade that advantage for efficiency, and many were unwilling to make the trade.
Cytora was built around that reality. We read structured and unstructured risk information and digitize it against each insurer’s own underwriting criteria across new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments. Insurers author their view of risk, and the platform applies it at scale.
This year has shown me that digitization is the starting point. Insurers now want to run the whole underwriting workflow on that view of risk, from intake and triage to enrichment, routing and referral. As AI agents take on more of that work, the question that matters is whose view of risk they follow. With Cytora, it’s always the insurer’s. Agents work to the insurer’s own criteria, every step is explainable, and underwriters stay in control of the decisions that need their judgment.
That’s why Cytora continues to deliver standalone value for insurers, orchestrating end-to-end agentic underwriting and claims workflows built on each insurer’s view of risk. Being part of Applied extends that focus, connecting the same platform to the brokers and the network on the other side of the trade.
Brokers know which markets they want to grow with and where each risk belongs. Too often, friction gets in the way of acting on it. Every insurer wants risk in a different format, appetite is hard to see, and building a submission means hours of rekeying. So risks go to the markets that are easiest to reach, not the ones the broker would choose, and insurers miss the risks that best fit their appetite.
AI is now speeding up both sides of the trade, and the first complete, credible quote increasingly wins the business. Insurers that are slower to quote see quote-to-bind ratios fall. But speed helps only when the risk that arrives is complete and the insurer's criteria travel with it. That points to the same conclusion as the first two lessons: progress needs both sides of the trade working from the same risk, in real time.
Applied Epic® runs the daily workflow for two-thirds of US carriers. Cytora digitizes risk for seven of the 10 largest commercial insurers.
Put those lessons together and the path forward becomes clear. Brokers need to capture risk once, at the source. Insurers need to receive it complete and run their underwriting workflow on it, from intake and triage to routing and referral, with their own view of risk applied at every step. And the connection between them needs to carry that risk to the markets that want it, without anyone rekeying it in the middle. We call this Connected Trading, and Applied is the only company that brings all three pieces together: the broker's workflow, the network between markets and the agentic underwriting workflow that runs on the insurer’s view of risk from end to end.
Applied Epic® holds risk information where brokers make placement decisions. Cytora reads that risk against each insurer's criteria. Ivans® carries risk across management systems to the right markets. The same Cytora engine also sits behind AutoFill in Applied Epic as it expands into commercial lines, so the technology that reads risk for insurers is starting to help brokers capture it at the source.
It's already happening in the market. With Submissionless™, decision-ready renewal risks reach preferred markets without the broker building a submission. With email-to-quote, brokers keep sending emails as they always have and receive an underwriting indication within minutes. In fall 2026, the first production Submissionless quote reached a small business without anyone filling in a form or rekeying a single field.
For insurers, that means more submission volume, a lower expense ratio and better risk selection. Underwriters stay at the center, with complete risk in front of them and more time for the decisions that need their judgment.
That's the story Applied's new identity tells. On October 28, 2026, Applied™ introduced its new brand and tagline, The Current That Connects Insurance™. When I first saw it, it read like a description of the year we've just had. Our tagline at Cytora has always been Making Risk Flow™, and a current is what you get when risk moves freely across every connection, carrying data, intelligence and action that make the next one more valuable.
For the insurers and MGAs we work with, the practical changes are small. Cytora and Ivans now sit together under Applied, with one roadmap across the policy lifecycle. In the US, Cytora is part of the Applied suite for carriers. Everywhere else, we remain Cytora, an Applied company. Your platform, logins and team stay the same, and cytora.com remains the home for the Cytora platform.
And to the management system providers and brokers whose work runs through our network, our message is the same as always:
Our commitment to open, neutral connectivity across every management system, including yours, is unchanged. We'll keep earning your trust the same way we always have: by keeping the network open and investing in the connections your users depend on.
Two things will guide how we work with you. First, your view of risk stays yours. Your underwriting criteria set you apart, and our job is to help you apply them faster and at greater scale. Second, we'll keep building with you. The insurers, MGAs and brokers we work with have shaped Cytora from the start, and that won't change.
Many of you were with us early, and your feedback helped make Cytora what it is today. We're excited about what comes next and look forward to building it with you.
